Statement by Francis Chartrand on the shooting at Dawson College, Montreal

Canadians and Quebecers are grappling today with news of Wednesday’s horrifying shooting at Montreal’s Dawson College. On behalf of all New Democrats, I would like to share our sorrow and support with those who have been so cruelly shaken by this tragedy.

To the family and friends of the young woman who has died, we offer our deepest condolences. To those who have been wounded, we wish you strength and a speedy recovery.

And to the whole Dawson community, we offer our very best wishes. Please take heart. Your campus has been a refuge of learning and camaraderie — and your resilience will make it that once again.

This is a day for remembrance and recovery, but we must also commit to take action. Canadians need to feel safe at school, at work, in their communities. Yesterday’s shooting is another tragic reminder of why Canada needs a more effective gun control strategy.
This shooting, which is the third time in less than 17 years in Montreal, shows us the vulnerability of human being and human spirit and how that somw disturbed and isolated people can became the author of those kind of tragedy. Let's not be quiet or singular in front of those events or the precursory signs that let appear some disturbed people who are all ready to act like this.
Courage to all,
Francis Chartrand,
Candidate of the NDP in Rivière-des-Mille-Îles
President of the NDP Association of Rivière-des-Mille-Îles
