Broken promises show Harper can’t be trusted - Tuesday June 12, 2007

Dion being hypocritical on fiscal imbalance
OTTAWA – Prime Minister Harper’s broken promises on transfers to working families of Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador have made him untrustworthy, the NDP said today.
“First they said they would protect the Atlantic Accord, and they broke that promise,” said NDP leader Jack Layton. “They said they wouldn’t punish MPs who voted against the budget, and then they expelled Bill Casey. Now they’re daring the provinces to take the federal government to court. This is no way to run a country.”
“Stephen Harper promised he would deliver honest and open government and has delivered the opposite,” said Layton. “He’s delivered deception and bullying, two characteristics ordinary Canadians find undesirable in their prime minister.”
“The Conservatives’ bullying is matched only by the Liberals’ hypocrisy on equalization,” said Layton. “Stephane Dion pretends to hold up Bill Casey as a man of honour because he voted against his party on a budget bill as a matter of principle but he kicked Joe Comuzzi out of his caucus for doing the exact same thing.”
The NDP is unified in voting against Budget 2007 because it fails to close the prosperity gap, meet the needs of working families and breaks promises on transfers for Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.
