Rights groups challenge Iran leader at racism meet, by Francis Chartrand
GENEVA (AFP) — Human rights groups on Sunday challenged President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to eliminate severe discrimination in Iran, ahead of his arrival at a UN conference against racism and intolerance in Geneva.
The International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH), the Baha'i International Community (BIC) and the Iranian League for Human Rights (LDDHI) said Ahmadinejad must tackle discrimination against religious and ethnic minorities, women, and halt incitement to hatred.
"By coming to the Durban Review Conference, President Ahmadinejad signals a commitment to the conference's goals of eliminating all forms of discrimination and intolerance," said Diane Ala'i, the BIC's representative at the UN in Geneva.
"His first move on returning home, then, should be to address the severe discrimination and persecution that have flourished under his tenure," she added.
Ahmadinejad is the most prominent head of state scheduled to address the opening of the UN review conference on Monday, which is being boycotted by the United States, Israel, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands.
His virulent anti-Israel statements and comments casting doubt on the Holocaust have prompted fears that his speech could overshadow the primary aim of the conference, to take stock of racial discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance around the world.
The rights groups said religious discrimination was widespread in Iran, notably affecting Baha'is, Christians, Jews, Sufis, Sunni Muslims, and other minorities, through arbitrary arrests, intimidation and harassment.
They also accused Iranian government-controlled media of fomenting hatred against Bahai's, and warned that repression against activists belonging to ethnic minorities including the Kurds was "rising dramatically".
"Human rights have sharply deteriorated in Iran under the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities, as well as against women, are of grave concern," said Karim Lahidji of LDDHI.
The human rights groups called on governments taking part in the conference, as well as the media, to hold Ahmadinejad accountable for violations in Iran.

TEHRAN (FNA) - The Iranian Foreign Ministry has published a book under the title: Violation of human rights by Canada. According to a statement issued Wednesday by the Press Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the book examines various subjects through an analytical review.
Among the topics: Failure by Canada of its international obligations; violations of economic, social and cultural violation of civil and political rights; violation of the rights of indigenous peoples; violation of the rights of refugees and immigrants; violation the rights of women and children, brutality and abuses by the police.
Iran has also introduced the world to diplomats at UN headquarters in New York in September a document of 70 pages on violations of human rights by Canada.
The paper shows that the Canadian government denies its people food, drinking water and the right to work.
"Excavations and routine beatings by Canadian police have been a concern for the international community," said the booklet, entitled Report on the situation of human rights in Canada, adding that "the practices of the Police are alarming simply because ... police operates as if judges were not needed." .

Washington, Nov 18 (IranVNC) - A resolution presented to the UN by Canada to denounce the human rights situation in Iran could deprive the country of opportunity to establish links fair with the Islamic Republic, said a source from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran to the official news agency IRNA in an interview today.
The third committee of the UN General Assembly must vote on November 21 on the resolution presented by Canada. The resolution describes human rights violations in Iran and calls on Iran to stop it.
If approved, the resolution would be subject to a final vote by the General Assembly plenary.
"By developing and presenting this anti-Iran resolution, Canada is demonstrating once again its hostility towards the Iranian nation," according to the news agency, quoting an "informed source".
The source continued: "The current approach of the Canadian government would effectively deprive the country of the chance to enjoy fair and equal relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran".
"The gesture of Canada hostile to the Islamic Republic of Iran deserves an appropriate response," added the source.
The resolution calls that Iran put an end to torture and "degrading punishment, public executions, execution of juvenile offenders, discrimination against women and minorities. The resolution further calls the "empowerment" of the Baha'i community and the release of political prisoners, according to the website of the Canadian MP David Kilgour.
The text also calls on Iran to respect the rule of law and the right to a fair trial, and requests an update on the situation of human rights in that country to UN Secretary General, Ban Ki -moon.
Canada tabled a resolution on the situation of human rights in Iran every year since the death of photo-journalist Zahra Kazemi montéalaise to prisoin Evin Tehran in July 2003.
Lawyers for the Kazemi family have said she had been beaten to death in prison. Iran has accused Reza Ahmadi, an intelligence agent for his murder but was acquitted.
Iran has allowed no international team of forensic experts to examine the body of Kazemi, who was buried before his family could see it.

Support women of Iran, by Noémie Cournoyer
For over 30 years, Iranian women are victims of religious fascism imposed by the fundamentalist mullahs in power in Tehran.
Laws misogynist (personal and family status), inhuman punishment (lashes for being "badly veiled", stoning to death for adultery ...) and all kinds of discrimination (social, professional, ..) are in force and practiced every day in the name of religion.
Our mothers, our sisters and our daughters have been relegated to the rank of second class citizens and suffer daily from the worst repression and deprivation because women! Their situation is worse since the arrival in power of the current President of the Republic of mullahs, an ultra-reactionary among others. Several women, including minors, were sentenced to death in recent months and await their fate on death row.
However, the daily struggle of Iranian women against injustice has never ceased, on the contrary, it has intensified every day despite the brutal agents of the mullahs. Last year, despite the official ban, they were several thousands to demonstrate with great courage in Tehran and other major cities in Iran to celebrate International Women's Day and to reclaim their legitimate rights and their freedom .
They need voices strong support, especially in the West where we have the "privilege" to discuss the shortcomings of existing laws on equality, parity and so on.
So encourage and support the events of oppressed women of this great country with a civilization of several thousand years.
Every voice, every statement, every release and every individual or collective approach. In our era of communication and information Iranian women hear, but also the authorities of the regime.
The victory and the emancipation of Iranian women will they not an additional boost to global movement of women?
